Melissa Tirpak, a second-grade teacher at Kane Elementary School, has been named Marlborough Teacher of the Year for 2017 by Marlborough’s United Brethren Lodge of Freemasons. Tirpak, who has been teaching in Marlborough for fifteen years, was honored for her outstanding commitment to students, engagement with parents, and impact on the community. She was nominated by the entire second-grade teaching team (bottom photo).

The Kane teacher was surprised in her classroom earlier this month by a contingent that included Mayor Arthur Vigean, Superintendent of Schools Maureen Greulich and United Brethren Lodge Master Joseph Delano. The visitors were joined by Kane Principal Wendy Stanley to announce the good news to Tirpak in front of her students.

Tirpak was formally honored, along with award finalists Isabel Nowlan of Richer School and Karen Briggs of the Early Childhood Center at an evening reception May 17th at United Brethren’s Jacobs Hall. The event set a record for attendance, and included several students who came to support their favorite teachers. The number of nominations for this year's program also set a record.
